1913‐88 British obstetrician-gynaecologist. He served as director of the Human Reproduction Centre in Oldham, a city northeast of Birmingham. In collaboration with RG Edwards, he delivered the first "test-tube baby" in 1978. The method involves mixing an egg and sperm in a glass vessel, observing the passage of time, and then returning the egg to the mother, but there is debate as to whether discarding the fertilised egg that is not returned can be considered an "induced abortion". It is also technically possible to return the egg to the uterus of another woman or animal, so their work is fraught with delicate issues for the future.
