[Characteristics of Spaghetti Westerns]
Italian westerns were originally made as imitations of American westerns, with cheap Hollywood stars playing the leading roles, and Italian actors and staff all using pseudonyms of English names (for example, director Sergio Leone was originally called Bob Robertson, and actor Giuliano Gemma was called Montgomery Wood). The term spaghetti western was nothing more than a derogatory term for them. Anthony Mann (1906-67), an American director who made a number of masterpieces in the 1950s (Winchester 73, 1950; River of Wrath, 1952; The Naked Spur, 1953; Far Country, 1955; Westerners, 1958, etc.), said, "They lack the true spirit of the western. 　イタリア製西部劇は，当初はアメリカ製を装ったイミテーションとしてつくられ，主役はハリウッドから出演料の安い三流スターを招き，イタリア人の俳優やスタッフもすべて英語名の変名を名のるといったぐあいで(たとえば，当初セルジオ･レオーネ監督はボブ･ロバートソン，俳優のジュリアーノ･ジェンマはモンゴメリー･ウッドと名のっていた)，先のspaghetti westernというのもそれを揶揄（やゆ）した蔑称にほかならなかった。1950年代に西部劇の傑作の数々(《ウィンチェスター銃73》1950，《怒りの河》1952，《裸の拍車》1953，《遠い国》1955，《西部の人》1958，等々)をつくったアメリカの監督，アンソニー･マンAnthony Mann(1906‐67)にいわせれば，〈西部劇の本物の精神がこもっていない。登場する男たちの歩く道は人生の暗黒面でしかない。…
