This tectonic basin is located in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, in the southern part of the Tamba Highlands. It is long and narrow, stretching about 10 km north to south and 3.5 km east to west, and its eastern edge is bounded by a steep fault scarp running from northwest to southeast, while its western edge is made up of flat mountains and shallowly dissected valleys, forming an irregular foothill line. The floor of the basin is made up of a complex small alluvial fan developed below the fault scarp and the floodplain of the Oi River. As the remains of the jori system indicate, the area has been developed since ancient times by irrigation from the Oi River, and rice paddies are well developed, but in recent years, vegetable cultivation to supply Kyoto City has also become popular. The central settlement of Kameoka City is located in the southern part of the basin, and the central settlement of the Yagicho district of Nantan City is located in the northern part. Residential development for commuters to Kyoto City is increasing. [Takeo Oda] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
