Karyoshun

…The term was used by Gao Lian, a Chinese literati in the late 16th century, in his book Yanwen Qingzhong Zheng, to criticize six late Zhejiang school painters: Zheng Yanxian, Zhang Fu, Zhong Li, Jiang Song, Zhang Lu, and Wang Zhao. The same sentence was reprinted in Xiang Yuanbian's Jiu Lu of the Window and Tu Long's Kaoban Yuji, and was widely circulated among literati in the late Ming Dynasty. However, earlier, He Liangjun (1506-73) had also criticized a similar group of painters for their rough brushwork. This criticism was largely a sectarian attack by the Wu school, which was then in its heyday, against the rival Zhejiang school, and today the powerful forms of the works of the Crazy and Evil school are being reevaluated. …
