Taiko Kimono

Japanese: 太閤記物 - たいこうきもの
Taiko Kimono
It is a type of puppet theater and a branch of Kabuki and Kyogen. It is based on the life story of Toyotomi Hideyoshi from the end of the Sengoku period. It is a well-known subject matter in the documentary novel Shinsho Taikoki and the reading book Ehon Taikoki, published from 1797 (Kansei 9) to 1802 (Kyowa 2). There are around 30 puppet theater pieces alone. The first was Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Honcho Sangokushi, which had a major influence on subsequent works. It premiered in 1719 (Kyoho 4). It was followed by Takeda Izumo's Shuyuse Yatsukoosamonogatarari (The Tale of a Young Tiger's Success) in 1725.
