…He admired solitary heroes (pilots and mountaineers) who stood apart from the crowd, and showed a talent for satire and wordplay. In his collection of poems, Behold, the Traveller (1936), he was the author of some of the finest love poems. After moving to the United States in 1939, he wrote collections such as New Year's Letter (1941), The Age of Anxiety (1948), The Shield of Achilles (1955), and Clio Hymn (1960), which increasingly distanced themselves from political themes and deepened their religious contemplation. He also served as professor of poetry at Oxford University (1956-61), but we should not forget that this versatile poet was also a writer of brilliant essays and exquisite drama. …
