…His Melos is a work for solo singing, and because its contents are centered on personal feelings, it is placed in the same line as Sappho and Alcaeus. The rhythm he used was relatively simple, and many of his poems were themed on romantic feelings and alcohol. This led to the creation of many imitative poems in late antiquity, and led to the compilation of a collection of poems called Anacreonteia (Anacreonian). After the publication of a printed version of Anacreonteia in the 16th century, the imitative poems continued to be very popular, and even influenced other poets, which was a somewhat strange development. …
