Kotoba no Tamao - Words of the Lord

Japanese: 詞玉緒 - ことばのたまのお

Written by Motoori Norinaga. 7 volumes. Completed in 1779 (An'ei 8). Published in 1785 (Tenmei 5). A study of so-called teni o ha, it empirically explains the law of correspondence, centered on kakare-musubi, using poems, mainly from the "Hachidaishu," as material. It is a commentary on "Te Ni Wo Ha Himi Kagami." The name comes from the idea that nouns and predicates are like balls, and teni o ha plays the role of threads that join them together to give them a unified whole. This book organized and unified previous teni o ha studies, had a strong influence on later generations, and gave birth to the "Tamao school."

本居宣長著。7巻。安永8 (1779) 年成立。天明5 (85) 年刊。いわゆるテニヲハの研究で，係結を中心とする呼応の法則を，『八代集』を主とする歌を資料に実証的に説いたもの。『てにをは紐鏡』の解説編にあたる。名称は，体言・用言などを玉にたとえ，テニヲハはそれらを継ぎ合せてまとまった統一を与える糸の役割を果す，という考えからきている。本書は従来のテニヲハ研究を整理して統一を与えたもので，後世に強い影響を与え，「玉緒派」を生むことになった。
