1560‐1634 German surgeon. German name Wilhelm Fabry von Hilden. Born in Hilden near Düsseldorf, he received his higher education in Cologne, then trained in orthopedic surgery, and became an assistant to the surgeon Kosmas Slot. He deepened his scientific medical knowledge through many dissections, and opened clinics in Cologne, Lausanne, and Bern. He invented tourniquets and surgical instruments, and developed cataract and other surgeries. He is the author of many books and is called the "father of German surgery."
