A nobleman during the Kamakura and Nanboku-cho periods. Along with the Anegakoji clan (Hida) and the Ichijo clan (Tosa), they were known as one of the three governor families. Descended from the Murakami-Genji clan, Nakanoin Masaie, the grandson of the fifth head of the Minamoto clan, Minamoto no Michichika, adopted the family name Kitabatake due to his place of residence in Kyoto. His great-grandson Chikafusa was highly valued by Emperor Godaigo and greatly increased his family's name. Together with Chikafusa's son Akiie, he played an active role as a senior vassal of the Southern Court during the Nanboku-cho period, and Chikafusa was proclaimed a quasi-empress by Emperor Go-Murakami. Chikafusa's son Akiyoshi was appointed governor of Ise Province by the Southern Court, built Tage Castle in Ichishi County, and played an active role on the side of the Southern Court. His descendants continued to hold the position as governor of Ise Province. Akiyoshi's grandson Mitsumasa raised an army in 1428 (Shocho 1) to support Prince Ogura, a descendant of the Southern Court, but was defeated and killed. The Okawachi clan and other clans also had many in Ise Province and maintained their influence until the end of the Sengoku period, but were destroyed by Oda Nobunaga in 1576 (Tensho 4).
