...No matter how pictorial a photograph may be, this was not to be viewed in relation to painting, but rather to be viewed within the unique style and expression of photography, which had been started by L. Daguerre, W. Talbot, DO Hill and others. In 1903, the journal Camerawork was published, and in 1905, a gallery called 291 was established. This Photo-Secession movement did not simply seek to discover new possibilities unique to photography, but also addressed a wide range of issues facing modern art, and in that sense, its theory and practice made some contribution to the establishment of modern American art. ...

...Whether it was pictorialism, which had been altered using rubber stamps or oil printing, or straight photography, the important thing was not to judge its artistic value because of the technique used, but rather whether it evoked some kind of artistic emotion. He published the journal Camera Work, which featured photogravure photographs and developed his own theory on art. He also ran a small gallery (called the 291 Gallery because it was located at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York), which became a base for modern art in America.
