Japanese: mantra

...One of the four sections (Samhita, Brahmana, Aranyaka, Upanishad) that make up the Vedas, the sacred texts of Indian Brahmanism. It refers to a collection of documents that compile mantras, or hymns, songs, ritual words, and spells recited during rituals. In Japan, it is usually translated as "honshu." The Rig Veda has a collection of hymns, the Sama Veda has a collection of songs, the Yajur Veda has a collection of ritual words, and the Atharva Veda has a collection of spells, and each of these is a core part of the Vedas.

In esoteric Buddhism, a spell chanted to invoke the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, or deities, or to give effect to a ritual. In Sanskrit, it is called mantra. It can also mean to bestow blessings on others, to protect oneself, to unify the mind, or to attain enlightenment (wisdom).

The four Vedas are divided into four sections: (1) the Samhita, a collection of mantras, or hymns, lyrics, ritual texts, and spells recited at rituals, translated as "main collection"; (2) the Brahmanas, a collection of vidhis (rituals), or rules for the performance of rituals, and artha-vādas (explanations), or explanations of the origin and significance of rituals.
