The Treaty was signed on February 26, 1921 between the Soviet Union and Iran shortly after the coup by Reza Shah Pahlavi. It was an equal treaty replacing the unequal treaties between Russia and Iran during the imperial era. Article 6 of the treaty granted the Soviet Union the right to station Soviet troops on Iranian territory in the event of a threat to the Soviet Union from a third country. Based on this treaty, Soviet troops were stationed in Iran during World War II. Immediately after the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Iran unilaterally abrogated Articles 6 and 5, claiming that they violated Iranian sovereignty, but the Soviet Union did not agree.
