It is a case where various subjective complaints that cannot be classified as one disease are mainly vague physical complaints, but there is no objective evidence of organic disease. For example, it is a case where two or more of the following symptoms are complained of, or various combinations of them: palpitations, dizziness, headache, heavy head, general fatigue, chest tightness, diarrhea, tremors, etc. It is often seen during menopause, and menopausal disorders are sometimes called vague complaints syndrome.

Clinically, vague symptoms can be classified into depression, neurosis, psychogenic autonomic dysfunction, and essential autonomic dysfunction, but the most important thing is to rule out organic diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis, early hypertension, essential hypotension, latent heart failure, anemia, epilepsy, thyroid disease, adrenal cortex disease, and idiopathic edema, and to repeat tests as necessary. Treatment is mainly psychotropic drugs combined with psychosomatic treatment.

一つの疾患としてまとめられない種々の主観的訴えで、漠然とした身体的愁訴が主体となっていながら他覚的に器質的疾患の裏づけができない場合をいう。たとえば、動悸(どうき)、めまい、頭痛、頭重感、全身倦怠(けんたい)感、胸部圧迫感、下痢、振戦（震え）などのうち、二つまたは三つ以上、あるいはこれらの種々な組合せを訴えるわけで、更年期のときによくみられ、更年期障害を不定愁訴症候群とよぶこともある。

　不定愁訴を臨床的に分類すると、抑うつ症型、神経症型、心因性自律神経失調型、本態性自律神経失調型に分けられるが、もっとも重要なことは器質的疾患、たとえば肺結核、初期高血圧、本態性低血圧、潜在性心不全、貧血、てんかん、甲状腺(せん)疾患、副腎(ふくじん)皮質疾患、特発性浮腫(ふしゅ)などを除外診断することで、必要に応じて検査を繰り返し行う。治療としては、向精神薬を主体に心身症の治療を併用する。
