Queneau, Raymond
Born: February 21, 1903 in Le Havre
[Died] October 25, 1976. Paris. French novelist and poet. He studied philosophy at the University of Paris, and joined the Surrealist movement around 1925, contributing to the group's journal, Le Révolution Surrealisme (first published in 1924), but left in 1930. In his novels Le Chiendent (33), Un rude hiver (39), Pierrot mon ami (42), Zazie dans le métro (59), and Les Fleurs bleues (65), he vividly portrays various characters, especially common people, with a humor full of irony and tolerance, and his humorous style, which makes use of colloquial language and neologisms, is highly skilled. His poetry collections, including Chêne et chien (The Oak Tree and the Dog) (37), Petite Cosmogonie portative (The Creation of a Portable Microcosm) (50), and Si tu t'imagines... (52), are in a balance between fantasy and bold linguistic experiments and pure classical tradition.
