Gretna Green

A small village in Dumfries and Galloway, southern Scotland, UK. It is located near the border with England, near the west coast. Since marriage laws in Scotland were not as strict as those in England, it became popular from around the 1770s for English couples to elope and cross the border to marry in this village. However, in 1856 the laws were revised in Scotland, making the conditions stricter, and this custom fell out of use. [Shigeru Koike]
