Numbat (English spelling)

Japanese: フクロアリクイ(袋蟻喰) - フクロアリクイ（英語表記）numbat

Also known as the giant larva. A marsupial mammal of the Numbat family that lives in Australia and feeds mainly on termites and ants. It looks like a squirrel with a long, bushy tail, but has a long, pointed snout and a thin, string-like tongue. Its body color is a marbled yellowish brown with broad white horizontal stripes. The color becomes darker toward the rear of the body. Its brood pouch is not fully developed and is incomplete. Body length 17.5-27.5 cm, tail length 13-17 cm, weight 275-450 g. It usually lives in forests and is active alone, mainly at dusk, searching for trees infested with termites or ants.

別名オオムシナメ。オーストラリアにすむシロアリとアリを主要な食物とする有袋目フクロアリクイ科の哺乳類。姿はリスに似て，長くふさふさした毛のはえる尾をもつが，吻（ふん）が長くとがり，細長く紐状にのびる舌をもつ。体色は霜降りの帯黄褐色の地に，幅の広い白色の横縞がある。体の後部にいくに従い地色は暗色となる。育児囊は発達せず不完全。体長17.5～27.5cm，尾長13～17cm，体重275～450g。ふつう森林にすみ，おもに薄暮時に単独で活動してシロアリあるいはアリの巣食う木を捜す。
