An atoll in the southeast of the Republic of the Marshall Islands in Micronesia, in the central Pacific Ocean. It is made up of about 60 coral islands and is the capital of the republic. It has an area of 10 km2 and a population of 20,000 (1988). Before World War II it was a Japanese mandate territory, and after the war it became a United Nations trust territory of the United States and became the administrative center of the Marshall Islands. During the Japanese colonial period, Yalut Island was the center, but it was destroyed in the war and a new administrative center was built on Majuro Island. When the Marshall Islands established their own autonomous government in May 1979, Yalut Island became its capital. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
