Sudan, which straddles the tropics between 4° and 22° north latitude, has a diverse natural landscape, ranging from the arid Sahara desert in the north to the tropical rainforests at the southern tip. The White Nile, which originates in Lake Victoria in Uganda and collects rivers flowing from the mountainous region near the southern border, flows northward in the center of the country, slightly to the east, and merges with the Blue Nile, which originates in the Ethiopian highlands, in the capital, Khartoum, and the Atbara River in Atbara, to form a single Nile that flows into Egypt. The northern desert region, called the Nubian Desert, is a rocky wilderness with an annual rainfall of less than 100 mm.
