...Metaphorical literature (the Buddhist scriptures use the character 语微微) uses metaphors, examples, and past stories to explain the teachings of the Buddha. A group of avadana (metaphorical) works, such as the Avadana Shataka (Collection of One Hundred Sutras) and the Divya Avadana, which deal with the beautiful stories of the past and present of Buddhist disciples and followers, were produced during the first few centuries of the Christian era. The 11th century Avadana Kalpalata by Ksēmendra also belongs to this category. In addition, Aryaśura's Jatakamala, which elevated the Jataka to a beautiful Kabya-style literary work, should not be forgotten as a 4th century Sanskrit Buddhist literary work.
