...At the time, the center of the Indonesian nationalist movement was the Islamic League, but he used local activists such as Semaung to create factions within the Islamic League, expanding the influence of the Social Democratic Union and laying the foundations for the socialist movement in Indonesia. After being exiled by the colonial government in 1918, he went to the Soviet Union and attended the Second Congress of Comintern under the name Marin. On colonial issues, he was Lenin's right-hand man and advocated an alliance with the national bourgeoisie. In 1922, he was sent to China, where he used his experience in Indonesia to play a major role in realizing the "Kuomarine-Communist cooperation."
