Lynch, C. (English notation) LynchC

...the punishment, especially the death penalty, meted out by the people without going through proper legal procedures. The name is said to come from the name of Charles Lynch, a Virginia lyncher who inflicted private punishment on loyalists who supported Britain during the American War of Independence. During the pioneering days of the West, where the judicial system was underdeveloped, lynchings of suspected criminals were not uncommon, and even in the South before the Civil War, abolitionists and those who helped fugitive slaves were often hanged or burned at the stake by the people. After the Civil War, lynchings became frequent, including those organized by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), and in the 1890s, the number of recorded cases averaged more than 150 per year.
