A military commander during the Northern and Southern Court period. The eldest son of Yorisada. Year of birth unknown. Commonly known as Koshiro. Hyobu no Sho (Minister of Military Affairs) and Mutsu no Kami (Lord of Mutsu). Junior Fourth Rank, Lower. After the Genkō Rebellion, he followed Ashikaga Takauji and Tadayoshi, and in 1334 (Kenmu 1), he took Prince Moriyoshi Shinno to Kamakura, and during the Nakasendai Rebellion, he accompanied Tadayoshi as he and Prince Narinaga escaped from Kamakura. In 1336, he and his family traveled to Shikoku, and together with Kazuuji, the direct descendant of the Hosokawa clan, he played a central role in encouraging the Ashikaga forces to join forces with Takauji, and fought in various parts of the Kinai region. In 1338 (Ryakuo 1), together with Takano Moronao and others, he defeated Kitabatake Akiie in Izumi Province. Due to these achievements, he was appointed as the head of the Samurai Department, and was also the shugo of Kawachi, Izumi, Sanuki, and Tosa Provinces. However, in 1347 (Sadawa 3), he fought against Kusunoki Masatsura and fled to Kyoto, and the shugo of Kawachi and Izumi Provinces was given to Takano Morinaga. As a result, he played an active role on the side of Tadayoshi during the Kan'o Disturbance, and regained his position as shugo of Izumi Province when a peace agreement was reached. Later, when the conflict between Takauji and Tadayoshi flared up again, he switched sides to Takauji. In 1352 (Bunwa 1), he attacked Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, the seat of Emperor Gomurakami, and finally won the battle by burning down the surrounding temples and shrines. However, he died immediately afterwards, and it was said that this was the result of the temples' punishment. His posthumous name was Shoenji Ranko. He loved waka poetry, and his works were collected in the "Fuga Wakashu" and other collections.
