The word means "melting pot," but in the American social context it means "melting pot of races." It is an expression used to describe the state in which diverse cultures from diverse races and ethnicities blend together in American society to form a new lifestyle and culture. The word became popular after the drama of the same name by Israel Zangwill (1864-1926), a Jewish British playwright, which was based on this American society. However, since the black revolution of the 1960s, the voice of each minority group has increased, and the idea that we should aim for a country with a complex cultural pluralism in which each race and ethnicity does not lose its own cultural characteristics and these constitute a harmony of the whole has become stronger, so the expression "salad bowl" has come to be used instead of melting pot.
