Grey Hooded Bunting

Japanese: ホオアカ(頰赤) - ホオアカ（英語表記）grey hooded bunting

A passerine bird of the family Emberizidae (illustration). Total length about 16 cm. It looks very similar to the white-throated sparrow, but is slightly smaller. The male's head is gray. Its cheeks are reddish brown, it has a cluster of small black vertical stripes around its throat, and it has a reddish brown band on its chest. The female is lighter in color than the male. It breeds from southeastern Siberia to the Korean Peninsula and Japan, as well as in eastern China and the Himalayas, and those from the north migrate south in winter. In Japan, it breeds in the mountains and plains north of Kyushu, and is often found in the lowlands south of Honshu in winter, especially in the rice paddy areas of southern Kyushu.

スズメ目ホオジロ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約16cm。ホオジロによく似ているが，ホオジロより少し小さく，雄の頭頂は灰色。ほおは赤褐色で，のどを取り巻いて黒い小縦斑が密集し，胸に赤褐色のバンドがある。雌は雄より色が淡い。シベリア南東部から朝鮮半島，日本にかけてと，中国東部およびヒマラヤで繁殖し，北のものは冬季に南へ渡る。日本では九州以北の山地，平地に繁殖し，冬は本州以南の低地，とくに九州南部の水田地帯に多い。
