Duke of Windsor (Edward Ⅷ)

King of the United Kingdom (reigned January to December 1936). Born as the eldest son of the future King George V, he became the Prince of Wales in 1911 when his father ascended to the throne. After serving in World War I, he traveled around the world in the 1920s and worked hard to prevent public opinion in the British Empire from turning away from Britain. In 1936, he ascended to the throne as King Edward VIII upon the death of his father. That same year, his love affair with the American Mrs. Simpson came to light. The king's decision to marry the divorced wife divided the nation, and he chose to abdicate and marry her instead. He then lived a quiet life as the Duke of Windsor, mainly in France, with his wife.

イギリス国王（在位1936年1～12月）。後のイギリス国王ジョージ5世の長男として生まれ、父の国王即位により、1911年皇太子となった。第一次世界大戦に従軍したのち、20年代には世界各地を歴訪し、イギリス帝国内の世論がイギリスから離反するのを防ぐため尽力した。36年父王の死去によってエドワード8世として即位。その年、アメリカ人シンプソン夫人との恋が表面化した。離婚歴をもつ夫人との結婚を国王が決意したことで国論は分裂し、王は退位して夫人との結婚を選んだ。その後はウィンザー公として、夫人とともに、主としてフランスで静かな生活を送った。
