nakṣatra (English spelling)

...It is speculated that there may have been some kind of connection with Mesopotamian divination during this period. An element of astronomical divination unique to India is the 27 or 28 star signs (nakṣatra). The Śārdula‐karṇa‐avadāna (translated into Chinese as Madhāka-sūtra), a Buddhist text from around the 1st century AD, is a good example of astrology from this period, and the relationship between the sun, moon, and the star signs is the basis of divination.
