The Magic Bullet (English: The Magic Bullet Shooter)

An opera by the German Romantic composer Weber. Three acts. Libretto by Friedrich Kind. Based on an old German legend, it depicts the spiritual battle with the devil and the rescue of souls. Max, a hunter who loves Agathe, must win a shooting contest in order to marry her. Max, who has lost confidence, is tempted by Caspar, a hunter who sold his soul to the devil, to use the magic bullet. Max succumbs to temptation and obtains seven magic bullets, but he does not know that the seventh bullet will be at the mercy of the devil. On the day of the contest, the seventh bullet is aimed at Agathe, but in the end Caspar dies. Max confesses everything and he is forgiven.

This opera is famous as the decisive work that established German romantic opera, and the overture is often performed on its own. The male chorus "Hunter's Chorus" in the third act is also widely known. It premiered in Berlin in 1821. It premiered in Japan in 1947 (Showa 22).

ドイツ・ロマン派の作曲家ウェーバーのオペラ。全三幕。台本はフリードリヒ・キント。ドイツの古い伝説をもとに、悪魔との精神的戦いと魂の救出を描いている。アガーテを愛する猟師マックスは、彼女と結婚するためには射撃大会に優勝しなければならない。自信を失っているマックスに、悪魔に魂を売った猟師カスパルが魔弾を使えと唆す。誘惑に負けたマックスは七つの魔弾を手に入れるが、七発目の弾丸は悪魔の意のままになることを彼は知らない。大会当日、七発目の弾丸はアガーテをねらうが、結局カスパルが死ぬ。マックスはすべてを白状し、彼は許される。

　このオペラはドイツのロマン主義的なオペラを確立した決定的な作品として名高く、序曲は単独でもしばしば演奏される。また第三幕の男声合唱「狩人(かりゅうど)の合唱」も広く知られる。初演は1821年ベルリン。日本初演は1947年（昭和22）。
