Around 1834-90 A Sioux warrior and medicine man, he was the chief of the Hunkpapa Teton tribe. His real name was Tatanka Yotanka. He made a name for himself fighting the U.S. Army in various battles from the 1860s, and defeated Custer's army at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. He then fled to Canada, but returned to the U.S. in 1881 and surrendered. He was imprisoned until 1883. In 1890, he invited Kicking Bear to perform the Ghost Dance at Standing Rock, but was killed during a dispute with the Indian police who came to arrest him.
