Sitting Bull

Around 1834-90
A Sioux warrior and medicine man, he was the chief of the Hunkpapa Teton tribe. His real name was Tatanka Yotanka. He made a name for himself fighting the U.S. Army in various battles from the 1860s, and defeated Custer's army at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. He then fled to Canada, but returned to the U.S. in 1881 and surrendered. He was imprisoned until 1883. In 1890, he invited Kicking Bear to perform the Ghost Dance at Standing Rock, but was killed during a dispute with the Indian police who came to arrest him.

アメリカ･インディアンのスー族の戦士，まじない師で，ハンクパパ･テトン支族の族長。本名Tatanka Yotanka。1860年代から合衆国陸軍を相手に各地の戦闘で名をあげ，76年のリトル･ビッグホーンの戦でカスター軍をせん滅した。その後カナダに逃亡したが，81年に帰国して降伏し，83年まで監禁された。90年キッキング･ベアを招き，スタンディング･ロックでゴースト･ダンスが行われた際，逮捕に来たインディアン警官との紛争中に殺された。
