A leading German newspaper. In 1946 after World War II, the British occupying forces published a newspaper of the same name in Hamburg. In 1950, just after the end of the occupation, the Welt Foundation and the Springer Concern bought it and continued to publish it. It is the central media outlet of Springer, the largest conglomerate in the German media world, and despite being a new paper, it is now one of the two leading German newspapers, along with the Frankfurter Allgemeine. Compared to the Allgemeine, it is more flashy and aimed at the masses. The head office is in Hamburg. Circulation: Monday to Friday, morning edition 304,400, Saturday edition 337,300 (1997).
