Bad omen - bad omen

Japanese: 凶徴 - きょうちょう

A sign that indicates misfortune in divination, including I Ching. It is also an abnormal natural phenomenon that is believed to be heaven's punishment for bad behavior. In China, it is generally called a sign of punishment, and in the Hong Fan chapter of the Book of Documents, it is said that five types of bad behavior by a ruler will be met with abnormal events such as continuous rain, continuous drought, continuous heat, continuous cold, and continuous wind. The Hong Fan Five Elements of Fushou and the Five Elements Journal of the Book of Han, which follows on from it, further expand on this idea. [Yoshikawa Tadao]

易をはじめとする占いで凶の判断を示すしるし。また悪い行いに対して天がとがめとしてくだすと信ぜられた自然の異変現象。中国では一般に咎徴（きゆうちよう）とよばれ，《書経》洪範篇では，君主の5種の悪行にたいして，雨つづき，ひでりつづき，暑さつづき，寒さつづき，風つづきの異変が応ずるとする。伏生の《洪範五行伝》，さらにそれをうける《漢書》五行志はこのような考えをいっそう敷衍する。【吉川忠夫】
