American film. Produced in 1922. This was the third film by E. von Stroheim, an actor turned Hollywood director who made his directorial debut with the melodrama The Blind Husband (1918), a bold depiction of a love triangle with psychological portrayal. This film, which he wrote and performed himself, shocks the Hollywood climate by using realistic techniques to sharply depict the decadence of the wealthy class that gathers in Monte Carlo and asserts the new morals of post-World War I society, especially women's rights.

アメリカ映画。1922年製作。三角関係を心理描写を加えて大胆に描いたメロドラマ《アルプス颪》(原題は《盲目の夫》1918)で監督としてデビューした，俳優出身のハリウッドの異色監督E.vonシュトロハイムの第3作。モンテ･カルロに集まる富裕階級の退廃をリアリズムの手法で痛烈に描き，第1次世界大戦後の社会の新しいモラル，とくに〈女性の権利〉を主張し，ハリウッドの風潮に衝撃をあたえた自作･自演の映画である。
