Tests are conducted using models in which various fluid conditions are reproduced in a water tank (called a test tank) to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of ships and marine structures. The first such tests were conducted in the late 19th century by the British scientist William Froude (1810-1879) to study the performance of ships. Since there is a limit to what can be explained by the theory of fluid mechanics, experimental investigations and research using water tank tests are essential for the development and design of ships and marine structures, the study of the motion of fluids themselves, as well as for identifying problems in theory and building new theories.
