An atoll in the northwest of the Marshall Islands in the mid-western Pacific Ocean. It is located in the northern part of the Lalik Islands. Formerly a US trust territory, it was used as a testing site for atomic and hydrogen bombs from 1946 to 1958. During the 1954 hydrogen bomb test, Japanese fishing boats such as the Daigo Fukuryu Maru, which were operating nearby, were bombed. In 2010, it was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) as a symbol of the devastation caused by nuclear weapons. Bikini Atoll.
