Gonja

...a kingdom that appears to have been formed in the central part of the present-day Republic of Ghana in West Africa towards the end of the 16th century. During this period, Mande merchants were actively penetrating from the Great Bend of the Niger River in the north to the forested areas in the south. Perhaps parasitic on this long-distance trade, a group of Mande Gbanya warriors migrated to this region and founded the conquering state of Gonja. Rather than a single, centralized state, the Gonja was a confederation of several small kingdoms whose rulers were divided from a common dynasty.
