These high-quality inkstones are produced in Fujikawa-cho, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture. "Amahata" is pronounced "amahata" and can also be written as "amehata." It is said that the origin of this inkstone dates back to the Genroku period, when the first Amemiya Magoemon picked up a black stone from the Amahata River, a tributary of the Hayakawa River, a tributary of the Fuji River, on his way to a pilgrimage to Mount Minobu, and fashioned it into an inkstone. The fourth Amemiya Yozo presented one to the shogun family, and it became famous nationwide. It is designated as a traditional craft of the prefecture under the name "Koshu Amahata Inkstone."
