orchestration

...It refers to the method of realizing the composer's image of the timbre effect while taking into account the characteristics of each instrument when composing an orchestral piece, and also to the technical theory behind it. It is sometimes treated as a synonym for instrumentation, but while instrumentation is broadly related to the performance of each instrument and the general technique of effectively selecting and combining various timbres, orchestration is used from a historical perspective, especially in relation to relatively large-scale orchestral pieces for which the instruments to be used were specified from the mid-17th century onwards.
