Franklin Edgerton

1885‐1963
A linguist and Indologist born in Iowa, USA. He studied Sanskrit and comparative linguistics under M. Bloomfield, and lectured in Sanskrit and comparative linguistics at Yale University and other institutions. During that time, he studied in Russia and visited India. He achieved great success in the study of Buddhist Sanskrit, and his Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit, Grammar and Dictionary (1953) is considered an essential book for reading Sanskrit Buddhist scriptures. He also edited the original text of the Bhagavad Gita and translated it into English.

アメリカのアイオワ州生れの言語学者，インド学者。M.ブルームフィールドのもとで梵語，比較言語学を学び，イェール大学等で梵語，比較言語学を講ずる。その間，ロシア留学，インド訪問を経験。仏教梵語研究において一大金字塔を打ち立て，《仏教梵語Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit,Grammar and Dictionary》(1953)は，梵語仏典講読に不可欠の書とされている。そのほかに，《バガバッドギーター》の原典校訂･英訳等を行った。
