A musical term. Since the 16th century, it has meant "evening music" and has also been translated as serenade or nocturne. (1) A song sung at night by a lover's window while playing the guitar. Remains of this original usage can be seen in operas such as Mozart's Don Giovanni (1787), but since the 19th century, it has also become the title of an independent solo piece, such as Gounod's Serenade (1855). (2) An orchestral piece that was composed extensively during the Classical period, characterized by a multi-movement structure and a light character similar to a divertimento. Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik (1787) and Haffner Serenade (1776) are famous. (3) A large cantata or piece of dramatic nature composed, especially during the Baroque period, to celebrate royal or aristocratic occasions or for political occasions. In this case the Italian word serenata is usually used. [Mariko Teramoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
