An old town in Naka-gun, occupying the central part of the Mineyama Basin in northern Kyoto Prefecture. The main settlement is the old castle town, and it is the birthplace of the Tango crepe industry, which developed with the encouragement of the feudal domain. Even now, it is one of the centers of Okutango weaving, with distribution, research and development organizations related to the weaving industry concentrated here. The Kitakinki Tango Railway runs through the town. In April 2004, it merged with Omiya-cho in Naka-gun, Amino-cho in Takeno-gun, Tango-cho, Yasaka-cho, and Kumihama-cho in Kumano-gun to form Kyotango City. 67.45 km2 . Population 13,793 (2003). 京都府北部,峰山盆地中央部を占める中郡の旧町。主集落は旧城下町で,藩の奨励により発達した丹後縮緬(ちりめん)業の発祥地。現在も機業に関係する流通,研究開発などの機構が集中し,奥丹後機業の一中心。北近畿タンゴ鉄道が通じる。2004年4月中郡大宮町,竹野郡網野町,丹後町,弥栄町,熊野郡久美浜町と合併し,京丹後市となる。67.45km2。1万3793人(2003)。
