Also called intervening sequences. A region in the DNA base sequence of eukaryotes that does not specify the amino acid sequence of a protein. Many structural genes of eukaryotes have several to a dozen introns in between, which divide the region that specifies the amino acid sequence (called exon) into several parts. A structural gene containing introns is transcribed as is to become a precursor messenger RNA (mRNA), and then in a process called splicing, the introns are cut off and only the exons are connected to form the completed mRNA.

介在配列とも。真核生物のDNA塩基配列のうち，タンパク質のアミノ酸配列を指定していない領域。真核生物の構造遺伝子の多くは，数個から十数個のイントロンを介在させており，それらによってアミノ酸配列を指定する領域（エクソンと呼ばれる）はいくつかに分断される。イントロンを含む構造遺伝子は，そのまま転写されて前駆体メッセンジャーRNA（mRNA）となったのち，スプライシングと呼ばれる過程でイントロンが切り落とされ，エクソンだけがつながって完成型mRNAとなる。
