1863‐1934 A Russian orientalist. After graduating from the Oriental Department of St. Petersburg State University, he served as permanent secretary of the Academy of Sciences and director of the Institute of Oriental Studies. His academic achievements were wide-ranging, but he was particularly known for his work on the cultural and religious history of ancient and medieval India. He led two archaeological survey teams in East Turkistan, in 1909-10 and 1914-15. In 1897, he proposed an international project to publish Buddhist scriptures, which resulted in the publication of the "Bibliotheca Buddhica" series.
