Oldenberg - Hermann Oldenberg

German Indologist and Buddhist scholar. Born in Hamburg. Became professor at the University of Kiel in 1889, and at the University of Göttingen in 1908. In Indology, he excelled in linguistic and philological research on the Vedas, and in Buddhist studies, he published edited versions of the Pāli Vinaya and other texts, and made a great contribution to historical research on the life, doctrines, and religious community of the Buddha. His major works include the Vinaya Pitaka (Vinaya Pitaka) in five volumes (1879-1883), Buddha: His Life, Doctrines, and Community (1881), The Religion of the Veda (1894), The Rig-Veda (1909), and The Doctrines of the Upanishads and the Origin of Buddhism (1915). Posthumously, the Oldenberg Essays were published in 1967.

ドイツのインド学者、仏教学者。ハンブルク生まれ。1889年キール大学教授、1908年ゲッティンゲン大学教授となった。インド学ではとくにベーダに関する言語学的、文献学的研究に優れ、仏教学ではパーリ律蔵(りつぞう)などの校訂出版をはじめ、仏陀(ぶっだ)（釈迦(しゃか)）の生涯、教理、教団に関する歴史的研究に大きな貢献をした。主著に『ビナヤ・ピタカ（律蔵）』5巻（1879～1883）、『仏陀――その生涯・教説・教団』（1881）、『ベーダの宗教』（1894）、『リグ・ベーダ』（1909）、『ウパニシャッドの教説と仏教の起源』（1915）がある。没後、『オルデンベルク小論文集』が1967年に出版された。
