Coligny (English spelling) Gaspard de Châtillon, Comte de
Born: 16 February 1519, Châtillon-sur-Loing
Died August 24, 1572. Paris. French military officer and admiral. Nephew of the Duke of Montmorency. Leader of the Huguenots in the first half of the Wars of Religion. In 1557, he defended Saint-Quentin against the Spanish, but was urged to surrender and was a prisoner of war until 1559. During that time, he converted to Calvinism. After the Peace Treaty of Saint-Germain (August 8, 1570), he gained the trust of King Charles IX. Coligny tried to draw the King into the war against Spain, but Queen Catherine de' Medici did not want this war and persuaded the King to eliminate the Huguenot leaders, which led to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, which took place from August 23 to 24, 1572. At dawn on the 24th, Coligny was attacked and became a victim of the massacre.
