...It is said to have been composed by the Uruguayan Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez (c. 1897-1948) when he was a student, and there are various theories about the year of composition, including 1914 and 1917. It is said to have been premiered by pianist Roberto Firpo (1884-1969), but there are also other theories. The lyrics are either written by Matos Rodríguez himself or in collaboration with Pascual Contursi and Enrique Maroni, and in the mid-1920s, the lyrics by Contursi and Maroni came to be sung by many singers. ...
