A snail shell of the family Celastridae (illustration). The shell is cone-shaped, and the larger ones are about 4 cm high and 3.5 cm wide, but generally they are smaller. The shell is 5 to 6 stories tall and somewhat stepped. The top is black with about 20 or so ribs running diagonally above it. There are also about five or so ribs on the bottom. The opening of the shell slopes downward, and the inside is pearlescent, but the white part at the navel is greenish. The lid is round and brown. It is commonly found in the intertidal zone of rocky reefs south of the Boso Peninsula, and is collected along with snail shells such as Ishidatamigai. It is boiled and the meat is extracted and eaten, or made into seaweed soup. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
