A town in Kitamurayama County in north-central Yamagata Prefecture. Its center is along the Mogami River, and it prospered as a river port relaying upstream and downstream traffic. Even today, rows of earthen storehouse-style houses line the riverbank. The Ou Main Line runs through the town. The town produces a lot of rice, and its specialty products include cherries and tatami mats. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 79.54 km2 . 8,160 people (2010).
