A town in Kitamurayama County in north-central Yamagata Prefecture. Its center is along the Mogami River, and it prospered as a river port relaying upstream and downstream traffic. Even today, rows of earthen storehouse-style houses line the riverbank. The Ou Main Line runs through the town. The town produces a lot of rice, and its specialty products include cherries and tatami mats. The town suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 79.54 km2 . 8,160 people (2010). 山形県中北部，北村山郡の町。中心は最上川に沿い，上・下流の中継河港として栄えた。現在も土蔵造の家並みが川岸に並ぶ。奥羽本線が通る。米を多産し，特産物にサクランボ，畳表がある。東日本大震災で，町内において被害が発生。79.54km2。8160人（2010）。
