Born: September 14, 1547, Amersfoort Died May 13, 1619. Dutch politician. Born into a wealthy citizen's family. Studied law in The Hague. From 1576 to 1586, he was legal adviser to the city of Rotterdam, and from 1586 to the Parliament of Holland. He led the Dutch independence movement under William I of Orange (the Silent), and after William's death, helped his son Maurice to lay the foundations of the Dutch (Netherlands) Federal Republic. As legal adviser, he held the powers of Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic, and in 1696 he formed the Triple Alliance with England and France to oppose Spain, and in 1609 he succeeded in concluding a 12-year truce with Spain, which effectively recognized the independence of the Republic. However, he was in fierce conflict with Maurice and the Calvinists, who wanted to continue the war against Spain, and was arrested in 1618 and executed the following year.
