Coal mining settlement

Japanese: 炭鉱集落 - たんこうしゅうらく（英語表記）coal-mining settlement

A settlement formed around the homes of people who worked in coal mining. In many cases, it consisted of company housing for the coal mining company, shopping streets, and other facilities. In Japan, Nogata, Iizuka, and Tagawa in Kitakyushu, and Yubari and Bibai in Hokkaido were typical examples. Recently, most coal mines have been closed due to the downturn in the coal industry, and coal mining settlements are disappearing.

石炭の採掘に従事する人々の住居を中心として形成された集落。多くの場合，炭鉱会社の社宅群および商店街，その他の諸施設から成っている。日本では北九州の直方 (のうがた) ，飯塚，田川，北海道の夕張，美唄 (びばい) などがその典型とされた。最近では石炭産業の不況によってほとんどの炭鉱が閉鎖され，炭鉱集落はなくなりつつある。
