A representative French popular graphic weekly magazine after World War II. The layout of the magazine was strongly influenced by American popular graphic magazines, with news sensationalized using illustrations. It was launched in March 1949 by Jean Prouvost, a textile industry magnate who also had experience in newspaper management before the war and was rumored to have had ties to the Vichy government. Its circulation exceeded 1.8 million in 1957, but has been declining, to 1.29 million in 1970 and 910,000 in 1983. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
